Is hypnobirthing a scam?

There are several misconceptions about hypnobirthing, and ‘isn’t this a scam?’ is a common one.

Honestly? I kind of wish that it was a scam because it would certainly reduce the constant reading, learning and updating my knowledge, have been a lot cheaper for me to study, and I wouldn’t have had to write an almost-dissertation-length essay to get my (Royal College of Midwives-accredited) Diploma!

Alas, it is very genuine!

Thanks to the work ‘hypno’ is also sounds very new-age and hippy, as well as conjuring up thoughts of stage hypnosis - neither of which are what hypnobirthing is about.

In fact, as far back at the mid- 1950s, hypnosis’ use in medicine was researched. The outcome? It was approved by the British Medical Association as ‘an effective method of relieving pain in childbirth without altering the normal course of labour’.

Hypnobirthing is about empowering parents by giving them a bit more knowledge and understanding about labour, birth and their options than midwives are often able to do because of guidelines and time restraints and it introduces a calmness to labour and birth through the use of relaxations that unfortunately isn’t how most labours and births are depicted.

I deliver relaxing, informative and calm hypnobirthing classes either online or in your own home (depending on your location) and they feature lots of beautiful relaxations too!
